This year has seen a huge increase in public outcry and attention around the BAD practices of Wal-Mart and other big box stores. Legislation has been passed to stop the unchecked growth of big box development, including near our last Site Fighters Conference in Orlando, where the city council passed a moratorium to stop the construction of all stores over 75,000 feet until tougher rules are enacted. Just recently Chicago passed a big box living wage ordinance! Nearby to this conference, in Merced, CA, a huge coalition is forming to stop construction of a distribution center. The company is on the run!

Workshops will focus on tactics and strategies ranging from zoning ordinances to economic impact statements, using local referendums, and strains on local government services like transportation and health systems to stop new stores from entering communities.
